There is plenty to see and do in New York City, so much so that you may never want to leave. However, New York City is just one metropolis in a much larger state and country. Discover what awaits you beyond the city limits by taking a quick trip during your visit to New York City. 

Governors Island, NY

 

Take the ferry to Governors Island, a 172-acre island sitting in the middle of New York Harbor. Its usage dates from the 1500s. However, its first public use as a park began in 2003. Today, the island is open year-round as a cultural and recreational space. When visiting the island, there are plenty of things to do, including admiring the art installations, bike rentals, playing sports, or attending one of the many events. Take the self-guided walking tour that shows you the rich history of the island and its many uses. Several dining options are available, from drink stands and food trucks to elegant dining options. Check the events schedule before visiting, as many regular markets and pop-up shops take place on the island throughout the summer months.  

The Hamptons, NY

 

The Hamptons are famous for being the summer getaway destination for the wealthy of New York City. It is located on Long Island’s South Fork, making it a suitable destination for a quick trip outside the city center. When visiting the Hamptons, you will see perfect beaches, old lighthouses, and scenic vistas. There is luxury shopping and five-star dining to enjoy. Several art galleries and museums are open for your enjoyment. Finally, sip wine at one of the handful of wineries. Visiting during the summer is ideal if you are looking for the most activity and action. This is high season for the Hamptons, making it the busiest time of year. 

 

Storm King Art Center

 

Located in New Windsor, NY, is the 500-acre museum of Storm King Art Center. Stroll the grounds and admire the large-scale sculptures and commissions. The museum first opened in 1960; it continues to grow and evolve each year. To visit, it is best to reserve time-entry tickets online in advance. It is open from Wednesday through Monday from 10 am to 5 pm. The last entry of the day is at 4 pm. Tickets range in price from $23 to $110 based on the number of people in the vehicle. In addition to the in-house collection, this outdoor museum also hosts rotating exhibits.  

Cape May, NJ 

Travel a few hours south of New York City, and you will be in the picturesque town of Cape May, NJ. There are miles of pristine beaches to stroll as the Atlantic waters lap the shore. Admire the late Victorian architecture of the area's many homes and bed and breakfasts. Dining options abound, from simple walk-up faire to elegant formal dining. Explore the town and its shopping commons that feature boutiques full of souvenirs, apparel, jewelry, and art.
