The TCS New York City Marathon takes place on November 6, 2022. Last year, more than 25,000 runners from 91 countries ran the race, with an average finish time of 4.5 hours. For some, running is a lifestyle. For others, the marathon is something they long to check off their bucket list. Still, others are just excited to witness the event. What category describes you? Whether you’re a runner or a spectator, The Concorde Hotel New York has the perfect accommodations.
The first marathon was organized by the New York Road Runners in September 1970. There were 127 participants and 55 finishers, and the event took place in Central Park. By 1976, the marathon had outgrown Central Park and occurred throughout NYC’s five boroughs with 2,090 participants and 1,549 finishers. By 1997, there were more than 30,000 finishers; 2019 saw more than 50,000 finishers. Today, the New York City Marathon garners live TV coverage and the attention of paying sponsors (like Tata Consultancy Services). There is even a division called Team for Kids , which raises money for the New York Road Runners youth programs.
Do you want to run in the New York City Marathon? It’s recommended you start training about sixteen weeks before the marathon. However, if you’re in great shape or just like to live on the edge, you can still register to run through an international tour operator or an official charity partner.
In addition to following these competition rules, marathon runners must be vaccinated against Covid-19 and wear masks where required. The use of headphones and cell phones is discouraged while running. NYRR also offers running courtesy guidelines here .
Spectators are invited to watch the Opening Ceremony on November 4 th at 5:00 pm. Gather at Central Park’s Grandstand Seating located at West 66 th Street and Columbus Avenue to witness the Parade of Nations at the marathon’s finish line. On the day of the marathon, spectators can watch the race from almost anywhere between mile 3 and mile 26. The Grandstand Seating at the finish line is reserved for ticket holders . Tickets can be purchased for about $60 via Eventbrite. More than 3 million people show up each year to cheer on the runners. Verywell Fit offers the following advice to marathon spectators:
